Staff Correspondent, Khulna
Ten women ward commissioners of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) have appealed to LGRD Adviser Anwarul Iqbal to take necessary steps to empower them as per the High Court verdict delivered on August 16, 2004. They accused city Mayor Shaikh Tayebur Rahman of violating the High Court verdict. The women ward commissioners made the appeal in a statement faxed to the adviser yesterday. They also placed a seven-point demand in the statement. A copy of the statement was sent to Khulna Press Club. LGRD Adviser Anwarul Iqbal is scheduled to inaugurate the newly constructed Nagar Bhaban (KCC office) today. The demands are allocation of fund for implementing welfare-oriented projects of their areas, appointment of office secretary and peon at their offices, empowering them to issue birth and death certificates, participation in different development projects funded by foreign donors, specific circular regarding their rank and status, powers and responsibilities, enhancement of honorarium and immediate implementation of the HC verdict. The women ward commissioners also accused the Mayor of defying the order of LGRD ministry issued on June 15, 2005 asking him to implement the HC verdict.
