Ex-Jamaat MP Nazrul sued for extortion

A case was filed on Monday night against two local Jamaat leaders including detained former Jamaat lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam for their alleged involvement in extortion.Gazi Nazrul Islam has already been detained by joint forces. His name was included in the second list of graft suspects published by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on March 9. The complainant, SM Abdur Rashid from Chakbara village in Shyamnagar upazila, filed the case with Shyamnagar Police Station (PS). In his complaint, Rashid claimed that former Jamaat lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam and his uncle Gazi Abdus Sobhan extorted Tk 50,000 from him on May 7, 2005. In 2005, Jamaat lawmaker Gazi Nazrul falsely implicated Rashid's son Rabiul Islam and Amzad Gazi from the same village in the Mizan Gazi murder case influencing Arab Ali, the complainant of the murder case. Later, Gazi Nazrul through his uncle Sobhan demanded Tk 50,000 from Rashid in return for dropping his son's name from the murder case. Desperate to clear his son's name from the case, Abdur Rashid complied with the former lawmaker's demand and handed over Tk 50,000 to Gazi Nazrul at his house at Islampur in Shyamnagar upazila on May 7 in 2005, the allegation said. Officer in Charge Nawsher Ali of Shyamnagar PS confirmed the incident. Gazi Nazrul Islam, central Majlish-e-Shura member of Jamaat-e-Islami, was elected member of parliament from Satkhira 5 (Shyamnagar) in 2001 with BNP-led 4-party alliance ticket.
