Daily Shamokal publisher sued for extortion

Bangla daily Shamokal Publisher AK Azad was sued in a Tk 5 lakh extortion case on Monday.

Rokeya Chowdhury, a resident of Mohammadpur in the city, filed the case with Ashulia Police Station, sources said.

In the case statement, the complainant alleged that Azad, also owner of Hameem Group, along with five to six others tried to grab six kathas of land owned by herself and her nephew Awal Hossain at Norosinghapur under Ashulia near the capital last year.

Failing to occupy the land, the accused demanded Tk 5 lakh as toll, added the plaintiff.

According to the investigation officer of the case, Kowshik Ahmed, the case was sent to Dhaka District Magistrate's Court yesterday.
