3 govt officials held for bribery

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members arrested three government officials in two separate incidents of bribery yesterday.

A team of Rab-3 caught Mohammad Kamruzzaman, deputy assistant engineer of Desa (Dhaka Electricity Supply Authority) red-handed while he was receiving Tk 20,000 as bribe from the manager of an apartment building at Shantinagar.

The manager Golam Mustafa on Sunday proposed to pay him Tk 35,000 for reconnecting power supply to his building, which was snapped by the Desa earlier the same day. Mustafa paid the engineer Tk 15,000 that day and pledge to provide the rest yesterday, says a Rab press release.

It also said that Kamruzzaman had been taking bribe from the electricity users for a long time.

Another Rab-3 team held Abul Kalam Azad, head assistant of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (DSHSE) at his office at around 4:00pm while he was receiving Tk 6,000 from Neetish Kumar Pramanik, assistant teacher of English Department of Rajshahi Court Academy.

Besides, Tk 5,000 was also found in separate envelop in his desk drawer.

The same team also arrested Azad's next table colleague Amirul Islam, another head assistant, as Tk 18,000 was found in his desk-drawer, which might have been received as bribe.

Rab intelligence has been keeping an eye on the DSHSE officials as allegations of bribery in cases of enrolling schools for Monthly Pay Order, up-gradation, pension, increment and transfer are rampant in the office, the Rab press release said.
