'Radical change in judicial system a must to ensure justice'

Lawyers at a seminar yesterday said justice cannot be ensured if radical changes are not made in the existing judicial system.

The seminar titled 'Independent judicial system and general peoples' right to judiciary' was organised on the first day of the two-day national workshop, organised jointly by National Legal Aid Network (NILAN) and Gonoshahajya Sangstha, at the auditorium of Hotel Abakash in Mohakhali.

"In the present state of country and judicial system the prime duty of a lawyer is to ensure fundamental and human rights of people," said Justice K M Sobhan.

"Justice becomes absurd when judiciary is controlled by executives and major decisions are taken with diverse motives," said Dr Mizanur Rahman, professor of law department at Dhaka University, while presenting the keynote paper at the seminar.

"A judge must be independent to establish the rule of law," he added.

Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury and Advocate Enayetur Rahim discussed the keynote paper.

Another seminar titled 'Accountability and commitment of the peoples' representatives' was held in the second session with Dr F R Mahmud Hasan presenting the keynote paper.

Prof Mirza Hasan of Brac University discussed the paper while A M A Muhit presided over the session.

"In a democratic process values emerge through political discussions and it cannot be imposed," said Mirza Hasan.

"Existence of caretaker government (CG) suggests that the state of politics is not healthy in the country. What is the necessity of CG when the Election Commission is in action?" he questioned

A large number of lawyers attended the workshop.
