City Streets
Sadiq Rahim, Babar Road, Mohammadpur, Dhaka
If we think about the roads and highways of Bangladesh, we can easily visualize lanes, by lanes and highways that are not so smooth and spacious. Some roads, especially in the Dhaka city are very wide, but the number of such roads is very few. This actually illuminates our mind that we as a third world country should not expect more and should be satisfied with the road conditions. Nevertheless, the reality is that we are far behind the road conditions prevailing in the developed countries. Sometimes, while strolling and moving through the roads, we find holes in the middle of the roads or a manhole without a lid or a dug out road for emergency repair of sewage line. A worse situation is experienced when those dug out roads become muddy at times of rain, causing utter distress to the passersby who tries to cross over such mud, which is very risky. I think, in Dhaka city, however, the road conditions have improved a bit, thanks to the recent geared up efforts of the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC). In my opinion, the DCC and the other city corporations in Bangladesh can easily improve the conditions of the roads and highways, if they only make a little bit more effort in this direction. I also think if the city corporations consult with foreign experts for making roads of international standards as seen in the developed countries, the results may not be bad. We actually feel very elated when we find and walk through a smooth and plain road, instead of a rutted one that is not well cared for.
