CMP to rehabilitate evicted hawkers at 7 city spots

Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) has selected primarily seven places in a humanitarian move to rehabilitate the hawkers and mobile vendors who were evicted from different footpaths of the city in recent times. The proposed sites are Old Railway Station premises, Railway Polo Ground, Jamiatul Falah Mosque premises, Parade Ground (Chittagong College Field), Old Chandgaon Police Station building, Sher Shah Colony Eidgaon Ground and Outer Stadium. The move for rehabilitating thousands of hawkers came from the caretaker government to help end their untold miseries, said CMP Commissioner Mainur Rahman Chowdhury at a view exchange meeting with the senior journalists yesterday. He hoped that the evicted hawkers will soon be rehabilitated as per government plan and preparations to this end are almost complete. Commending the decision, the journalists urged the CMP administration to consider introducing 'Holiday Market' of Dhaka in the port city. The CMP commissioner said a crackdown will be launched soon against the owners of CNG-run auto-rickshaws who would not comply with their directives. "Our study says 30 percent of total crimes in the city takes place through these three-wheelers and we will take tough measures against the owners who fail to comply with the rule," he added. Commissioner Mainur also sought cooperation from all people especially the media to make the upcoming third ODI and first Test match against visiting India in the city a grand success. He assured the journalists of negotiating with Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials to find an amicable solution regarding the issue of press accreditation cards for the media people in Chittagong.
