2 extortionists arrested in Khagrachhari

Joint forces in separate raids yesterday arrested two alleged extortionists in Khagrachhari.They are Nagor Chakma and Tatindra Lal Chakma. Police said, acting on a tip-off, joint forces raided Nagor Chakma's Baradom village home in Dighinala upazila in the morning and arrested him. During interrogation he confessed that his gang led by Tatindra Lal Chakma were involved in collecting toll from different NGO officials and transports, police said. He also told police that his men demanded Tk 2.5 lakh from Grameen Bank officials in Khagrachhari and looted Tk 26,000 from its staff when they were returning after collecting weekly installments. Acting on his statement, joint forces raided the house of Tatindra Lal Chakma at Nenchi Bazar at noon and arrested him. Earlier, Grameen Bank suspended activities at five of its offices in Khagrachhari following demands for toll by extortionists. Police sources said, a gang of armed cadres 'closed' five Grameen Bank offices for refusing to pay them, Tk 2.5 lakh as toll. Police also said the armed cadres also threatened Grameen Bank officials in other areas of the hill district.
