Another extortion case against Ilyas Ali

Another extortion case was filed against former lawmaker and Sylhet district BNP chief M Ilyas Ali and five others with Sylhet Kotwali Police Station yesterday. Angura Begum, a member of Khajanchigaon union parishad of Biswanath upazila, alleged that Union Parishad Chairman Rajab Ali along with others misappropriated Tk 10 lakh by preparing fake deeds of a land they occupied to construct the union parishad building on June 16, 2003. She said she protested against this misdeed. She claimed the then lawmaker Ilyas called her to his home at Shahjalal Upashahar where Rajab and others were present. She said they used abusive words against her for protesting the fake deed making, threatened of dire consequences and demanded Tk 4 lakh as retribution. She said she was compelled to pay Tk 50,000 on December 12, 2004 at the lawmaker's house. The other accused in the case are Habibur Rahman, upazila engineer of LGED, Abul Bashar and Fazlur Rahman. There was an extortion case filed against the former legislator on April 27.
