The dead was identified as Wahid Murad, 28.

Acting on a tip-off, a Rab team raided a school compound at Gujra Howarpara village where Murad and his cohorts were holding a secret meeting at about 3:30am.

Sensing the presence of the Rab men, the gang opened fire, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate.

Rab sources said Murad received bullets during the "shootout" and died instantly while his accomplices managed to flee. He was wanted in eight criminal cases, the sources added.

Two guns and seven bullets were also recovered from the scene.
