An evening of poetry by Jiyonkathi


Jiyonkathi, a cultural organisation held a recitation programme at Natmondol, Dhaka University campus on May 14. The programme titled Tomar Akash Dao Kobi featured poetry of Rabindranath Tagore and other works by noted poets as a tribute to the Nobel laureate.

The organisation has been holding regular programmes since December 1997. This is the first time that they have staged a programme on Tagore's poems.

"The intention is to popularise Tagore among our youth," said Shawkat, a member of Jiyonkathi.

The programme began with Arun Bashu, an artiste of the organisation, reciting Puroshkar. Then Mehedi Hassan, narrated Kabyo. Other artistes who performed were Farhana Rahman, Trisha Sarkar, Mahbubur Rahman, Ejazuddin Ahmed, Shahid Reza Noor and Mahbubur Rahman.

Tumi Shudhu Pochishey Boishakh and Baami, two poems by Bishnu Dey, written in memory of Tagore were recited at the event. Among others, Rabindranather Proti by Shukanto Bhattacharjo and Rabindra Uttor Amra Kojon Juba by Mahadeb Shaha were also featured.

The programme ended with a group recitation of Tagore's poem Tran.
