Petition to take Koko's case under emergency rules accepted

A Dhaka court yesterday accepted a petition for taking the extortion case against Arafat Rahman Koko and his two brothers-in-law under provision of the Emergency Power Rules.Officer-in-charge of Gulshan Police Station Obaidul Haque, who is the investigation officer (IO) of the case, submitted the petition to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court, Dhaka, saying that the case should be taken under provision of the Emergency Power Rules, as it is a case of public importance. After scrutinising the petition, Metropolitan Magistrate Jagannath Das Khokon directed the general recording officer (GRO) to put the petition into the cases file. With the acceptance of the petition, no court can grant Koko, youngest son of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, and his two brothers-in-law bails during the investigation and trial of the case. On May 16, Abu Ahmed Jayed An Rabbi, proprietor of advertising firm Add Media Limited, filed the case against Koko and his two brothers-in-law--Mustaqin Reza and Muktaqin Reza--accusing them of extorting Tk 1.20 crore.
