Seven killed in road accidents


Seven people were killed in separate road accidents in Patuakhali, Munshiganj, Chittagong and Thakurgaon in the last two days.

Our correspondent from Patuakhali adds: Three people, including a policeman, were killed in a road accident on Patuakhali-Kuakata Road yesterday.

They were identified as Faruq, 34, a police constable of Bagerhat Police Station, Shahnaz Biswas, 45, and Mohsin, 38, of Amtali upazila of the district.

They were coming to Patuakhali from Amtali on a motorcycle.

The accident occurred at about 5:00am when an Amtali-bound truck from Patuakhali hit the motorcycle from the opposite direction at Shakharia.

Faruq and Shahnaj died on the spot while the motorcycle driver Mohsin died on the way to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital.

He was first admitted to Patuakhali General Hospital but the on- duty doctor sent him to Barisal.

Police seized the truck and arrested its driver Abdul Mazid.

Our Correspondent from Munshiganj adds: A child was killed in a road accident at Nimtoli area on Dhaka-Mawa highway of Sirajdikhan upazila yesterday.

The accident occurred when a Dhaka-bound taxi cab collided head-on with a Mawa bound bus at around 11:00am that also left three women passengers and the driver injured.

BSS from Chittagong adds: Two people, including a woman, were killed in separate road accidents in Chittagong in the last two days, police and hospital sources said.

The victims were identified as Rokany Dey, 65, wife of late Surendar Dey of village Purba Gujra under Chandanaish upazila and Jasim Uddin, 14, son of Mohammad Babul of Amin Colony under Bayezid Bostami Police Station in the city.

Rokany was injured as a truck knocked her in Gujra area at 9:00pm on Thursday night. Local people rushed her to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where she succumbed to her injuries at 7:00am yesterday.

Jasim received head injuries when a city-bound human hauler hit him from behind in Oxygen Crossing area at about 8:00am on Thursday. He succumbed to his injuries at 10:30pm that night.

A correspondent from Thakurgaon reports: A boy was killed in a road accident on Dinajpur-Panchagarh Road under Sadar upazila of the district on Thursday.

The dead was identified as Faridul, 13, son of Fazal of Purbo Nargun village.

Witnesses and police said a covered van ran over the boy when he was crossing the road at Khochabari Bazar at around 5:00pm. He died on the spot.

The police seized the covered van but the driver fled the scene.
