Detention Extension
Tarique, 40 others produced before HC advisory board

More than 40 detainees, including former prime minister Khaleda Zia's son and BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Tarique Rahman and Uttara Group owner Giridhari Lal Modi, were produced before an advisory board of High Court (HC) yesterday.

They were produced before the three-member board comprising two HC judges and one joint secretary for the home ministry for the decision whether or not their detention term would be extended.

The decision of the board, however, could not be known.

Tarique was taken to the High Court amid tight security at 12:45pm.

According to the Special Powers Act 1974, if detention term of a detainee is to be extended beyond 120 days, it is required to be approved by an HC advisory board.

Tarique was detained on March 7 on charges of extortion and graft. The others were detained at different times.
