Charges pressed against ex-MP Nadim, 17 others

Police pressed charges against former BNP lawmaker Nadim Mostafa and 17 others in a case filed for extortion and conducting terrorist activities in Durgapur upazila.Sub-inspector Golam Mohammad of Durgapur Police Station submitted the charge sheet to a first class magistrate court on May 18. The other accused are Durgapur Municipal Chairman and local BNP Secretary Saidur Rahman Mantu, BNP adherents Mominur Rahman, Enamul Haq, Shahin, Tuhin, Shamsul, Gaffar, Mantu, Abu Bakkar, Ansar, Akhtaruzzaman, Kazi, Alif, Chanchal, Bablu, Huda and Zaker. Police sources said the accused, as per direction of Nadim Mostafa, demanded Tk 1 lakh toll from Maria Union Chairman Molla Hasan Imam Faruk on the election day of union council on July 14, 2003. As Faruk refused to pay the toll, Nadim's accomplices resisted Faruk's followers from going to poll centers. As villagers protested, the former lawmakers' men launched terrorist attacks on them. Sekandor Ali, the complainant of the case, his brother Zamal and a few others were injured in the attack. Sekandor said he did not file any case at that time as Nadim was in power. Finding a congenial political atmosphere, he lodged the complaint on April 24 accusing 20 persons. However, police dropped names of Mostafa, Salam and Alauddin from the charge sheet, as they did not find sufficient evidence against them during investigation.
