A victim of campus politics
Haroon Rashid, Agrabad, Chittagong
There is a debate in the country about banning of student politics.I would like to ask the supporters of campus politics- why do you need politics on the campus? To serve whose purpose? What is the result of campus politics? I was a student of Chittagong University from 1987 to 1995 in the Department of Accounting. It took more than 8 years to finish my 4-year honours+master's course. I appeared for my 1991 master's exam in 1995! My retired father was eagerly waiting for the completion of my studies because I was his only son. He and the rest of the family were heavily dependent on my future earning. They waited through 1991, 92, 93, 94. My old parents became sick from the anxiety and disappointment. My father begged for loan every month. Can you believe it? Finally, I appeared in the master's exams in 1995 and after that somehow managed to find a job. But, the damage was already done. With continuous anxiety and disappointment and insult from the debtors, my father became a kind of disabled person and one morning we found he was not waking up. I touched his forehead, it was cold and he would not wake up again! Obviously, he was a victim of campus politics. Please do not defend campus politics! Teachers and students can get involved in politics, but that must not influence the campus environment.
