UN Peacekeepers Day observed


The fifth International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers was observed in the city yesterday with due solemnity as elsewhere across the world.

For the first time, Bangladesh observed the day though other countries of the world have been observing the day since 2002.

President Iajuddin Ahmed, Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed, Foreign Adviser Iftekhar A Chowdhury, UN Under Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations, chiefs of three services, inspector general of police and UN resident coordinator in Bangladesh gave separate messages on the occasion.

Marking the day, Bangladesh Armed Forces chalked out various programmes. The day began with peacekeepers run which was inaugurated by Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal SM Ziaur Rahman at 6:30am.

The chief adviser laid foundation of "Peace Monument" at the south-west corner of the National Parade Square at 3:00am.

A reception to nearest keens to fallen peacekeepers and retired injured peacekeepers was arranged at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre. CA attended the ceremony as the chief guest.

Advisers to the caretaker government, Chief of Army Staff General Moeen U Ahmed, Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Sarwar Jahan Nizam, Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal SM Ziaur Rahman, Inspector General of Police Nur Mohammad, media personalities, and high civil and military officials were also present on the occasion. Besides, UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh Renata Dessallien attended the ceremony.

Marking the day, the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies of Dhaka University (DU) and the UN Information Centre (UNIC) jointly organised a seminar at the Business Studies auditorium in the city.

Speakers at the seminar dwelt at length on the glorious role played by the peacekeepers of Bangladesh in various conflict-ridden countries of the world and expressed sympathy to the members of the families of the deceased.
