Nine killed in road accidents


Nine people were killed and at least 66 others injured in separate road accidents across the country yesterday.

Our correspondent from Nilphamari reports: Two people were killed and 30 others injured as a Dinajpur-bound bus from Saidpur collided with a pickup van on Rangpur-Dinajpur highway yesterday noon.

Police and local sources said the minibus loaded with passengers collided head-on with a pickup van coming from the opposite direction at Sonatala point of Rangpur-Dinajpur highway at 12:30pm.

One pedestrian was killed on the spot and a passenger of the minibus succumbed to his injuries on way while he was being taken to Rangpur medical college hospital in a critical condition. Besides, 30 people were also injured.

The dead were identified as Sarwar, 45, and Wasim, 28, of nearby villages. The injured were taken to Saidpur hospital. Of them three were shifted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

The drivers of both the minibus and the pickup managed to flee, while police seized both the vehicles.

A correspondent from Comilla adds: At least three people were killed and 16 others injured in a road accident at Syedpur on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Chouddagram upazila yesterday morning.

According to police, the accident occurred at about 6:30am when a Dhaka bound passenger chair coach collided head-on with a Chittagong bound Iron-slipper laden lorry leaving both the drivers of the vehicles and one bus passenger killed on the spot and 16 others injured.

Identity of the two dead was confirmed. They are: lorry driver Abu Taher, 40, of Chikondondi village in Hathazari upazila in Chittagong district and bus driver Rupchand Mia, 36, of Malshapara in Sirajganj district.

The critically injured were sent to different hospitals and clinics in Comilla and Chouddagram.

A case was filed with the Chouddagram Police Station and the bodies of the deceased were sent to the Comilla Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Our correspondent from B'baria adds: Two people were killed in two separate road accidents at Bhadughar and Sunarampur villages of the district yesterday.

The dead were identified as Kamrunnahar, 6, and Rakibul Hasan, 35.

According to eyewitnesses and police sources, the first accident took place on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Sunarampur village under Ashuganj upazila.

Kamrunnaher, daughter of Abul Kalam Azad, was crushed under the wheels of a speeding truck while she was crossing the road with her mother. She died on the spot.

The driver and helper along with the truck escaped the spot.

In second accident, Rakibul was killed when a Kuti-bound bus from Dhaka knocked him down and crushed under its wheels on Brahmanbaria-Comilla highway at Bhadughar village under sadar upazila, while he was crossing the road.

He died on the spot.

Police seized the bus. However, the driver and helper of the bus fled the scene.

The autopsy of the body was done at Brahmanbaria sadar hospital.

A case was filed with Brahmanbaria Sadar Police Station in this connection.

UNB from Magura adds: Two people were killed and 20 others injured when a bus plunged into a roadside ditch at Mashalia in Sreepur upazila on Magura-Langalbadh road yesterday noon.

Police said a Magura-bound bus from Sreepur fell into the ditch at noon when the driver tried to overtake a rickshaw-van, killing two passengers on the spot and injuring 20 others.

One of the deceased was identified as Mithun, 35, of Sreepur. The identity of the other victim could not be known immediately.

The injured were admitted to Magura and Dariapur hospitals.

A case was filed with Sreepur Police Station.
