'Japan upholds peace-building approach'


Fourth Foundation Day Lecture of the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies, Dhaka UniversityFourth Foundation Day Lecture of the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies, Dhaka University (DU), was held yesterday.

Japan Ambassador to Bangladesh Masayuki Inoue delivered the lecture titled "Japan's Approach to Peace-building: Multifaceted Contributions for Sustainable Peace" at Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) in the morning.

He said the international community should unite to promote a comprehensive and coherent approach to peace if they want permanent resolution of conflicts and durable reconstruction of the war-affected regions.

Based on this recognition, Japan's contribution to peace-building in the international arena has been increased with its efforts of economic cooperation through official development assistance (ODA) programme, he said.

The ambassador said as an observer nation of Saarc, Japan continues to provide support to peace and stability in South Asia through the framework of Saarc.

Presided over by DU Treasurer Prof Syed Abul Kalam Azad, Vice-Chancellor Prof SMA Faiz, Pro-VC Prof AFM Yusuf Haider and Dean of Social Sciences Faculty Prof Harun-Or-Rashid, founding chairman of the department Prof Dalem Chandra Barman and others were present on the occasion.
