Sony, a second year student of chemical engineering, died during a gunfight between two factions of BNP-backed Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) on the campus on this day in 2002.

To mark the occasion, wreaths were placed at the memorial of Sony on the campus by her parents, students of the university and representatives of different organisations including Gano Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain and Engineer Abul Kashem.

Anti-Terrorism Buet Students Unity observed the day as "Terrorism- free Campus," while Samajtantrk Chhatra Front demanded the naming of a women's hall of the university after Sony.
