Two Bangladeshis win Bronze medal in Asian Pacific Mathematical Olympiad
Two young mathematicians from Bangladesh won Bronze medal in Asian Pacific Mathematical Olympiad (APMO) 2007, the most prestigious mathematics contest of the region, says a press release. Both Zobaer Islam and SM Shohidul Islam have recently passed HSC examinations and both of them hail from Rajshahi. Besides, six other participants from Bangladesh also won Honourable Mention. APMO is the biggest international mathematical olympiad of this region. This year 212 students from 23 countries participated in this olympiad. Unlike International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), the students had to solve the problems of the olympiad in their own country. However, the answer scripts were sent to the coordinating country (South Korea) and they sent the results to all participating countries. President of Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad Committee (BdMOC) Prof Jamilur Reza Chowdhury in a statement congratulated the winners and expressed his gratitude to all students, teachers, guardians and sponsors for their support. Professor Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, vice president of the committee, said that it will encourage the students to do better in future. Dutch-Bangla Bank and the daily Prothom Alo sponsored the math olympiad activity in the country which has became the biggest student show of the country. The winners will receive their certificates in a programme to be organised soon, added general secretary of BdMOC.
