NGO worker abducted for ransom

A gang of criminals has demanded a Tk1 lakh ransom for the release of an NGO worker they had abducted early yesterday from Kulbaria village of Gangni upazila in Meherpur.The abducted, Ferdous Wahid Pramanik, 35, is a resident branch manager at Kulbaria unit of Nijera Kori, a Jessore based NGO. According to Gangni police, members of a gang named Dukhu Bahini approached Ferdous introducing themselves as local service seekers and abducted him at gunpoint. Dukhu, the gang leader, later called up the NGO and made the ransom demand. Gangni police admitted to hearing about the abduction and ransom demand and said that no one filed any case in that regard yet. Three people had so far been abducted in the district in a month. Two of them were released after payments of large ransoms, while the other managed to escape from the abductor's hideout.
