Garo leader Ritchil's body exhumed

Indigenous leader Chalesh Ritchil's body was exhumed yesterday and sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.

Mahfuzur Rahman, additional superintendent of police (North) in Tangail, told The Daily Star that first class Magistrate Siddiqur Rahman was present during the exhumation at Magunthinagar village in Madhupur.

Sources said Sandhya Rani Simsang, Ritchil's wife, along with other family members, local indigenous leaders, Tariqul Islam, additional district magistrate of Tangail, Dr MA Parvez Rahim, upazila nirbahi officer of Madhupur, and Riaz Ahmed, officer in charge of Madhupur Police Station, were also present during the exhumation.

Earlier on May 24, the one-member probe committee of retired judge Rofi Uddin Ahmed during his visit at Magunthinagar village in Tangail had assured Ritchil's family members that his body would be exhumed for an autopsy if necessary.

Chalesh Ritchil was arrested by joint forces on March 18 and died the same day in their custody.
