Road accidents kill five


At least five people were killed in separate road accidents in Bogra, Mymensingh, Brahmanbaria and Khulna yesterday.

Staff correspondent from Bogra reports: At least two people were killed and three others injured when a passenger bus turned turtle near Addirgola Bazar area in Bogra yesterday.

The dead were identified as Mohsin, son of Moazzem and Daulat, son of Abul Kashem, of Gabtoli upazila.

Witnesses said the Bogra-bound bus from Tarunihat turned upside down on the road near Addirgola as the driver lost his control over the steering, leaving passengers Mohsin and Daulat dead on the spot.

The driver and helper of the bus managed to escape.

Our correspondent from Mymensingh adds: A female schoolteacher was crushed under the wheels of a speedy bus at Patgodam Bus stand near the Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge in the town yesterday.

The victim was identified as Khwama Rani Sarker, 30, daughter of Suresh Chandra Sarker, also an assistant teacher of Khaliajuri Pilot High School under Khaliajuri Upazila of Netrokona district.

Police and locals said Khwama Rani the speedy bus hit her when she was waiting for a bus at the bus stand to go to Netrokona, leaving her dead on the spot. Khwama Rani came to Mymensingh to participate in a training course on teaching.

The body was sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) for autopsy.

Our correspondent from Brahmanbaria adds: One girl was killed in a road accident on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Sunarampur village under Ashuganj upazila yesterday.

The dead was identified as Marufa Begum, 7, daughter of Abdul Awal of Adampur village under Astogram upazila of Kisoreganj district.

Witnesses and police said the accident occurred when Marufa Begum was crossing the road, leaving her dead on the spot.

The autopsy of the body was done at Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital.

Police seized the bus but the driver and helper managed to escape.

Our staff correspondent from Khulna reports: One person was killed in a road accident at about 5:00pm yesterday in front of Aleem Jute Mill at Atra under Khanjahan Ali Police Station in Khulna city.

The dead was identified as Dilip Kumar Pal, 45, son of Pulin Kumar Pal of the same area.

Witnesses said the accident occurred when a truck from Jessore ran over him while he was crossing the road.

Transport services on Khulna-Jessore highway remained disrupted for about half-an-hour when angry mob staged demonstration on the road protesting the accident.
