Another jute worker dies of ‘starvation’

Another worker of laid-off state-owned Peoples Jute Mills died of starvation on Saturday.

The on-duty doctor of the emergency ward of Khulna Medical College and Hospital declared him dead when he was taken there after falling sick at 8:30pm.

Md Sirajul Islam, 52, left his wife, two daughters and only son to mourn his death.

He was buried at Goalkhali graveyard at Khalishpur after namaz-e-janaza in the Peoples Jute Mills compound yesterday.

Mill authorities gave Tk 2000 for his burial.

According to his wife Lucky Begum, Sirajul fell sick on Saturday evening after starving for three days.

"I procured cooked rice begging from door-to-door which was not enough even to feed my three children," she said, adding, "I have also been starving since last three days."

With Sirajul, two jute mill workers died of starvation in last 72 hours.
