Democracy and tolerance
Adnan R. Amin, Dhaka
This is with reference to a TV-show titled 'Shongbad Protidin' (CDL-sponsored) broadcast on Banglavision. I call to attention the episode from the night of May 28, 2007, featuring eminent Barrister Tania Amir as guest speaker. On the topic of the ongoing reform of political parties, it was said by the host that our constitution fundamentally reflects democratic values and the parties must start to reflect that too. Adding on, the respected guest also questioned whether political parties whose political-ideologies do not reflect democratic values should be allowed to practise politics in the country. A rhetorical question was posed, "Weren't these parties (indirectly) committing treason?" My takeout from this session was that anyone choosing not to subscribe to the democratic ideology - is a traitor ...guilty of treason! And treason, as any Will-Bill-George knows, is a punishable crime. Both the notion and its source are alarming. I do not treat this matter lightly for it comes from a barrister. These are the people who will demarcate the fine line between Legal and Illegal in the future. And she suggests that nurturing a political view other than democracy is treason ...and hence, a crime! I support democracy and want its institutionalization. But it should not be democracy that decries all other opinions and condemns it to the point of making it a crime! It can become like freedom in a prison-cell.
