The contributions of Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam to our literature are immense. While Tagore's volume of work is a mirror to the human psyche, Nazrul's literature enlightens and reinvigorates the mind -- said speakers at a discussion held at the Pabna Bonomali Auditorium last Friday. The discussion was part of the programme held by leading cultural organisation of Pabna, Lalitokala Kendra (EFA), marking birth anniversaries of Tagore and Nazrul. On the occasion EFA also gave a warm reception to Kazi Nazrul Islam's family. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Pabna, Manik Lal Bonik was the chief guest while Additional Deputy Magistrate, Pabna, Mahabubul Alam presided over the programme. Among others, educationist Professor Md. Nurunnabi and Nazrul's granddaughter Khilkhil Kazi spoke at the event. "When we were in school, Tagore and Nazrul anniversaries used to be celebrated at all institutions. However, most of the educational institutions now avoid such programmes and due to inadequate exposure the current generation knows very little if anything, of our cultural and literary heritage,"said Khilkhil Kazi. She also remembered the close ties between Kazi Nazrul Islam and Rabindranath Tagore. A cultural programme followed the discussion. Noted artistes of the country, Mohiuzzaman Chowdhury, Bulbul Islam and Fahim Hossain Chowdhury performed Rabindra Sangeet while Sharmin Shathi Islam, Bulbul Moholanobish, Salauddin Ahmed and Khilkhil Kazi performed Nazrul Sangeet at the programme. Local artistes also performed songs and dances at the event.
