Hasina barred from visiting Chittagong

The government has not permitted Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina to travel to Chittagong for visiting the areas devastated by landslides, citing 'security reasons,' sources said. However, no statement from the government was available in this regard. The AL chief was scheduled to visit the affected areas today, AL sources said. Hasina, who was in a personal tour to Tungipara in Gopalganj, curtailed her trip and returned to the capital for Chittagong visit. Her personal aides said that they had made all arrangements for Chittagong tour and she was expected to start from Dhaka at 7:00am today by road. Sources also said that Hasina's trip to the US has also become uncertain, as the government may not allow her to leave the country. She is scheduled to leave Dhaka tomorrow to visit her expecting daughter. On April 18, the government issued press notes imposing ban on Hasina's return from the US, but the ban was lifted later.
