Marvan back on Test duty

Sri Lanka have recalled the former captain and opening batsman Marvan Atapattu for the home Test series against Bangladesh next week, an official said Wednesday.

Atapattu, who was overlooked throughout World Cup 2007, returns to the side for the first time since the December 2005 Ahmedabad Test against India.

The veteran opener Sanath Jayasuriya is picked only for the one-day internationals where he will be joined by the recalled leg spinner Upul Chandana, who comes back into the side for the first time since November 2005.

Sujeewa de Silva, a 29-year-old left arm fast bowler returns to the Test team after a lay off of more than five years on the back of consistent performances in domestic competitions, a Sri Lanka Cricket official said.

He returns to play Bangladesh against whom he made his Test debut in 2002 and never played thereafter.

The champion off spinner Muttiah Muralidaran returns home from Lancashire, as does Kumar Sangakkara the star wicketkeeper batsman who played for Warwickshire.

Muralidaran, however, will return to Lancashire at the end of the Test series.
