Road accidents kill 10


At least ten people were killed and 39 injured in separate road accidents in Narayanganj, Mymensingh, Kishoreganj, Shariatpur, Netrakona, Tangai and Satkhira yesterday and on Tuesday night.

UNB from Narayanganj reports: A truck ran over three workers of a textile mill and injured five others in Sonargaon upazila on Dhaka-Chittagong highway on Tuesday night.

Local people said the Comilla-bound flour-laden truck swerved off and ran over the workers of Sinha Textiles Mill near Sonargaon Filling Station at about 10:30pm, killing three on the spot and injuring five others.

The dead were identified as Fazlul Huq, 60, Lokman alias Moktar, 20, and Akhter Ali, 20. All the deceased hailed from Kazardi village in Sonargaon upazila.

The injured were admitted to the hospital.

Meanwhile, Four people were killed and 35 injured in road accidents in Mymensingh, Bhairab and Shariatpur yesterday.

In Mymensingh, an unidentified youth died after falling from rooftop of a bus on to the ground in front of Charjhaugora School on Mymensingh-Haluaghat road at about 11:00am.

In another incident, a woman was crushed under the wheels of a bus at Khagdahar, on the outskirts of the town early yesterday. Identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.

An unidentified middle aged man was run over by a bus at Mahamudabad under Raipura upaila in Kishoreganj yesterday morning when he was crossing the road.

In Shariatpur, 36 passengers were injured when a bus plunged into a roadside ditch at Majhirhat in Naria upazila.

The injured were admitted to Sadar Hospital where Hafizur Rahman hailed from Manikganj died.

Our correspondent from Netrakona: One person was killed and 4 others were injured in a road accident on Netrakona-Mohongonj road at Birampur under Mohonganj upazila yesterday.

The dead was identified as Badal Mia, 40, of village Deothan in the same upazila.

Police and witnesses said a Mohongonj-bound passenger bus from Netrakona knocked down a rickshaw at Birampur at about 11:00am, leaving rickshawpuller Badal Mia dead on the spot and four rickshaw passengers Janu Mia, 60, Lavly Sultana, 25, Mizan, 9, and Maimuna, 1, injured seriously.

The injured were rushed to Netrakona Sadar Hospital in critical condition.

A case was filed with Mohonganj Police Station in this connection.

Our correspondent from Tangail adds: One person was killed in a road accident at Sadar upazila in the district yesterday.

The victim was identified as Mohammad Muslem Uddin, 27, son of Mohammad Taru Miah of Norunda Dakkhin Para village at Sadar upazila in Tangail.

Police and witnesses said the accident took place at around 6:00am when the driver of a Sarishabari-bound condense milk-laden truck from Kantchpur lost his control over the steering. The truck skidded of the road and crushed a passerby on Dhaka-Tangail road at Taratia area, leaving him dead on the spot.

Muslem was a worker of Universal Yarn Dying Ltd at BISIC industrial area at Sadar upazila.

Police sent the body to Tangail General Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Police seized the truck but its driver managed to flee.

Our correspondent from Satkhira adds: A four-year old boy was killed in a road accident at Tujalpur Bazar in Sadar upazila on Satkhira-Jessore road.

The deceased was identified as Sajib, 4, son of Matin Moral of village Tujalpur in the upazila.

Quoting local people police said a trolley knocked him down, leaving him injured seriously when he was crossing the road. He succumbed to his injuries on the way to Satkhira Hospital.
