Noor Ali's Case
Cops checking visitors' register of Ganobhaban

Police started checking the visitors' register of the then Ganobhaban to find out whether businessman Noor Ali visited the building on specific dates to handed over 12 cheques to the then prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Noor, managing director of Unique Group of Companies, mentioned in the extortion case he filed on Wednesday against the Awami League (AL) president and former prime minister that he had gone to Ganobhaban, now Prodhanmantri Bhaban, on different dates to give her Tk 3.2 crore.

Noor mentioned in the case that he handed over the money in 12 cheques to Hasina at Ganobhaban between June 8, 1997 and May 20, 1999 and the rest Tk 1.8 crore through Hasina's cousin Sheikh Helal at different times.

Sources said police would visit the Gulshan office of Noor within a day or two to investigate whether the allegations of the complainant of the case were true.

Officer-in-charge of Tejgaon Police Station Jane Alam, who is also the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case, told The Daily Star that he would appeal to court to obtain its permission to collect information about the 12 cheques from the bank concerned.

Meanwhile, the two flats that Noor Ali claimed, in the FIR (first information report) of the case, to have given to Helal does not have any tenants as they left in April.

Aminul Islam Amin, manager of the apartment building, told reporters that Helal's son-in-law used to collect monthly rents from the tenants. The total rent of the two flats was Tk 50,000, he added. He also said that a team of joint forces visited the flats on Wednesday.

Gulshan police, who are investigating a separate extortion case filed on Wednesday against Hasina and her cousin Sheikh Selim, said they have started investigation into the case. They said they would also visit the banks and places the transaction of Tk 2.99 crore was allegedly made.

Noor Ali and Azam J Chowdhury, managing director of Eastcoast Trading Private Ltd, filed the two cases with Tejgaon and Gulshan police stations on Wednesday against Hasina and her three relatives.
