Ex-BNP MP Gias sued for land grabbing

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) filed a case against former BNP lawmaker Mohammad Giasuddin yesterday in connection with grabbing six acres of BIWTA land at Shiddhirganj in Narayanganj.

The complainant, BIWTA Deputy Director of Narayanganj Golam Kabir, filed the case saying Giasuddin illegally occupied the land on the bank of Shitalakhya since 1990 and started a business of stone and sand.

In the first information report (FIR), he mentioned that Giasuddin rented out the occupied land to several institutions and earned Tk 5 crore since his occupation of the land.

Sources said BIWTA conducted a drive against land grabbers on January 1, 2006 when followers of the former lawmaker assaulted BIWTA officials. The BIWTA filed a case with a magistrate's court but no legal actions could be taken against the former lawmaker.
