Staff Correspondent
Dr Ainun Nahar Rita, a physician, and Nurunnahar Mita, an engineer, two sisters who had been keeping themselves locked up for more than a month with the symptoms of relapse of their mental illness, were brought out yesterday and admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) for treatment.Following a report published in The Daily Star on last Saturday, Bangladesh Society for the Enforcement of Human Rights (BSEHR) along with Pallabi Police Station managed to bring the two sisters out of their self-imposed confinement and admitted to the department of Psychiatry of BSMMU. Second Officer of Pallabi Police Station Mejbah Uddin said a team led by Elina Khan of Bangladesh Society for the Enforcement of Human Rights (BSEHR) yesterday informed the police that Rita and Mita need treatment again and went to the residence of the two sisters in Mirpur area at around 4:30pm. "At first, the two sisters got frightened seeing the policemen. Later, Elina Khan convinced them to come out and to go the hospital for treatment although they themselves thought they were quite all right," said Mejbah Uddin. Rita and Mita had been suffering from a serious mental illness called schizophrenia, which might cause from mental breakdown, suspicion, sense of insecurity and various social pressures that was relapsed as they stopped taking medicine, doctors said. While talking to the neighbours, this correspondent came to know that the two sisters were very much afraid of their eldest sister Kamrunnahar Hena, who they thought would capture their parental house. As Rita had been absent for more than a month from the office without any notice, the university authorities sent a show cause notice to her. However, on behalf of Rita, BSEHR would send the answer to the department of Histopathology of BSMMU where she works as a medical officer. BSEHR will send a reply to the university authorities so that Rita does not lose her job and at the same time. BSEHR has also made an action plan for the two sisters to provide better treatment in order to rehabilitate them, said Executive Director of BSEHR Elina Khan, adding that previously they observed the two sisters for six months after their rehabilitation on March 2006. "But as their psychiatrist said they were quite all right and the two sisters also said they do not need further help, BSEHR stopped monitoring them," said Elina adding that from now onwards BSEHR would keep an eye on both the sisters.
