'Take action plan to solve waterlogging problem in city '

Environmentalists at a press conference yesterday urged the government to take a pragmatic action plan to solve the waterlogging problem in the capital.

They also advocated for immediate cleaning up of box-culverts for smooth flow of rainwater and increasing the number of pumps to pump out the water.

The press conference was organised by Nagorik Sanghati at Dhaka Reporters' Unity Auditorium.

In a written statement at the press conference, General Secretary of Nagorik Sanghati Sharifuzzaman Sharif said the city needs a 260 kilometre square drainage network for proper pumping out of the logged water, while it has only 150 kilometre square drainage network.

He called for expanding drainage network of the city and setting up of more drains for quick flow of storm water.

Citing the examples of recent waterlogging in the city, he said around 50 areas went under water and if steps are not taken immediately the city dwellers will remain under constant threat of waterlogging.

He said the government should recover all grabbed canals and water bodies and enforce act related to water bodies properly.

Chairman of geography and environment department of Dhaka University Dr AQM Mahabub said waterlogging problem in the city needs strong political commitment.

He hoped that the caretaker government would take the issue seriously.

President of Nagorik Sanghati Dr ASM Atiqur Rahman, former chief engineer of Dhaka Wasa Kazi Muhammad Shish and General Secretary of Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon Mahidul Huq Khan also spoke.
