Compressed air car!
S.A. Mansoor, Gulshan, Dhaka
There was a fascinating report (June 1), on air powered cars. It is probably the most valuable news item of this young 21st century! For Bangladesh, it is a "blessing from Allah"; where we are importing almost all of our transport fuel; except for some natural gas conversion (a miniscule amount). An immediate policy decision at the government level has to be taken on this opportunity for foreign exchange savings over the long term in our foreign currency strapped country by reducing petroleum import! From passenger cars, I am sure Tatas will move on to other forms of public transport vehicles. It should also go for suitable conversion kits to convert our present petrol and gas run transport vehicles to the compressed air mode! This revolutionary engine will not only cut down our fuel import bill drastically, it will also help us in conserving our finite natural gas resources in the future! Given the cooling effect of air expansion in this engine; I am sure the engine cooling needs of this prime mover will be a very small load; compared to the existing set-up. The CTG must take this up on a top priority basis in the national interest; without wasting time on meetings and discussions. They should reduce import duties, Vat, other taxes and registration charges for encouraging everyone to import this fuel-less cars at the earliest. The only emission will be restricted to the power plants that will provide the electrical power to run the air compressor. Located at the power plant, it will be a very negligible electrical load on our overall power generation system. I will request the Energy Adviser to get in touch with Tatas to take full advantage of this innovation.
