Philippine overseas workers send $1.2b home in March

Philippine overseas workers sent 1.2 billion dollars home in April, up 32.6 percent over the same period last year, the central bank said Friday.

It was the 12th consecutive month that remittances surpassed the billion-dollar mark.

The bank said remittances for the first four months of the year totalled 4.7 billion dollars, up 26.1 percent on the same period last year.

A central bank statement said "remittances are expected to remain strong due to the increasing demand for highly-skilled and professional Filipinos, particularly in the fields of information technology, health care, hotel and restaurant, construction, and shipbuilding industries."
