Launches on all 33 Barisal routes stop plying

Waterway communication in Barisal region is disrupted as movement of launches on all the 33 routs is virtually stopped since Saturday morning.Port sources said port authorities Friday night issued an embargo on operation of launches on 28 inland routes and five coastal routes in the region "until further notice". Port officer Saiful Islam and River Traffic Inspector of Barisal BIWTA Abdul Malek said the order was given after cautionary weather signal no. 2 was hoisted for regional maritime ports and warning signal no.3 for seaports. Launches below 65 feet in length used to ply the 28 inland routes. Crew of large launches that mainly ply coastal routes, said movement of those vessels has been partially halted for want of passengers, as they are not setting sail amid turbulent waves near river estuaries. Rakibul Hassan of Barisal meteoriological office, said they recorded 77 mm rainfall from 6 am Saturday to 6 am Sunday. The Met office apprehended that the weather might remain bad for next few days.
