Landslide tragedy

The mind-boggling catastrophe which occurred due to the rains that came down in torrents in Chittagong on Monday came as a great shock to us all.

The normal life of the port city came to a halt as torrential rains left it in a mess.

As of today, the death toll has risen to 123 which is the highest ever causality as a result of devastating landslides in Chittagong, or in Bangladesh for that matter.

It is said that rampant hill cutting was the immediate cause of the grim tragedy.

We observed with sorrow that the authorities concerned took, by no means, drastic action against the goons involved in such an act and turned a deaf ear to the environmentalists, who had long been warning against perilous hill-cutting and destruction of forests.

We hope that the CTG will take the environment issue into account and direct the authorities concerned to remain vigilant against any further hill-cutting and destruction of forests that bring tragedy to human life.
