Syed Shamim Ahsan

I was moved by the right-up on the passing of Syed Shamim Ahsan, an ex-civil servant and a member of a well-known family. The writer aptly described the qualities he was endowed with and wished there were more of his kind in today's civil bureaucracy.

In concert with the writer, I have the same impression about him which I gathered in course of my professional assignments at the then Governor's House at Dhaka.

Regrettably, the finer qualities are now grossly devalued in society and even ignored by many as "old world values". In the process, they degrade humanity and consequently miss much of the charm that make our life worthwhile. JN Dixit, former Indian Deputy High Commissioner in Dhaka, rightly said: "Shamim, you are the quintessential gentleman."

Mentionably, Syed Shamim Ashan's grandfather Sir F. Rahman, former vice chancellor of Dhaka University of pre-partition era too as I learned from my father, who was privileged to know him personally, distinguished himself in society for his excellence in manners and social cultivation in his days.
