Chief engineer at security printing held over bribe

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) yesterday arrested Chief Engineer of Security Printing Corporation (Bangladesh) Ltd (SPCBL) Anwar Hossain when he was coming out of a private firm with bribed money at Baridhara in the city.

Rab sources said the Anwar Hossain demanded bribe from Meladon Centre, a firm that supplies necessary paper and ink for printing currency notes. He had taken Tk 20,000 from the firm a few days ago and threatened prevent it from taking part in tender bids for the SPCBL unless they paid him more.

Anwar went to the firm yesterday afternoon to realise more money.

Acting on a tip-off, Rab members were waiting outside the firm. They nabbed him as he was coming out with Tk 30,000 he took as bribe. The currency notes bore "secret seals" and "signature", Rab sources said.

Rab handed him over to Gulshan police at around 1:00am.
