Husband to die, father-in-law and mother-in-law get life

A court here in Chittagong yesterday sentenced one to death and two others to life-term imprisonment in a case for instigating a housewife to commit suicide.The victim Nusrat Haq Shantu died at Chandpur in 2003. Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal of Judge Shafiqul Karim in the verdict of the case yesterday handed down capital punishment to the victim's husband Sakhawat Hossain Sabuj. The tribunal also awarded life-term to Shantu's father-in-law Sarowar Hossain and mother-in-law Shahida while it acquitted other accused Taslima Akter, maidservant of the house, of the charge. According to sources, Victim Shantu was reportedly found dead with a scruff around her neck inside the bathroom of their house in Chandpur on November 23, 2003. The victim's father Mojibul Haq Shamim filed a case in this connection accusing four people, including the victim's husband with Chandpur Police Station on March 15, 2004. After two years of investigation, CID police submitted a charge sheet under section 302/34 against the accused for murder. Charge was framed against the accused in the case on August 10, 2006 while the case was sent to the speedy trial tribunal in Chittagong on November 1 last year. The tribunal gave the verdict of the case yesterday after hearing seventeen witnesses. Special PP Ahmad Kamrul Islam Chowdhury Sajjad, former PP Advocate Abdus Sattar and Kamaluddin Chowdhury appeared the case for the state and plaintiff while Advocate Monoranjan Pal, Advocate Bhulan Bhoumik and Imdadul Haq for the defendants.
