Depression on the Bay gets stronger

The well-marked low over west central Bay and adjoining east central Bay intensified into a monsoon depression yesterday.

The depression was centred about 1,065-km southwest of Chittagong port, 1,015-km southwest of Cox's Bazar port and 915-km south-southwest of Mongla port at noon.

"It is likely to intensify further and move in a northwesterly direction," said a Met Office bulletin.

"Under its influence, steep pressure gradient lies over north Bay and squally weather may affect the ports," the bulletin added.

Maximum sustained wind speed within 44-km of the depression centre is about 40 kph, rising to 50 kph in gusts/squalls. Sea will remain moderate.

Maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox's Bazar and Mongla have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal number three.

All fishing boats and trawlers over north Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast until further notice.
