A Dhaka court on Wednesday sentenced Kazi Nasiruddin Babul, editor of the Barisal-based daily Ajker Barta, to 17 years' imprisonment in an arms case.

Babul, also a former president of the Barisal Press Club, is a close aide to detained businessman Giasuddin Al Mamun.

Judge AKM Enamul Huq of the Special Tribunal-3 of Dhaka handed down the verdict in presence of the convict.

According to the prosecution, Gulshan police arrested Babul with an illegal pistol and ammunition at the gate of his residence on April 3, 2007.
