Gano Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain yesterday urged the countrymen to elect qualified people through a fair election for establishing a truly representative democracy."We have to establish a true representative democracy in the country. For this, we have to elect qualified representatives by ensuring a fair election by working unitedly," he said while speaking at a meeting with the lawyers on the present political situation at the district bar association auditorium. Dr Kamal, a staunch proponent of the current wave of sociopolitical reforms in the country, termed the nefarious act of squandering huge money by the politicians during poll campaign as the symptoms of sick politics. He alleged that all the representatives thus elected later indulged in pervasive corruption to get the returns on the crores they spent on electioneering. Dr Kamal urged the government to fix a limited amount of money as campaign expenditure for all the political parties to eliminate the mal-culture, as this culture can never bring welfare to the nation. "Country's politics has gone into the grips of the rich and musclemen. These musclemen cannot accept the people as the source of all power," he told his audience from the district bar and urged the people to thwart this malpractice to persevere the hard-earned democratic ideology. He also underscored the need for ensuring freedom of the judiciary, democratic ideology and a fair election for bringing "power back to the people from the clutches of the evil force". Dr Kamal also urged the lawyers to play an effective role in mobilising people for winning the crusade, now going on in the interim period. "Healthy politics will be reestablished in the country if honest and intelligent persons can be brought again in the lead," he said on a note of optimism. Chaired by district Bar Association president Advocate Shahjahan Mia, the programme was also addressed, among others, by Gano Forum presidium member Advocate Altaf Hossain, Advocate Badruddoza Jillu, Jaglul Haidar and Babu Ranjit Kumar Saha.
