Road accidents kill 4


At least four people were killed in separate road accidents in Dhaka and Tangail yesterday.

Staff Correspondent adds: At least two people were killed and five others injured in a road accident at Khilkhet area in the city early hours of yesterday.

The deceased were identified as Sirajul Islam, 42, and Mohammad Jahangir, 50. Abdul Jalil, 20, and Jashim Uddin, 20, were rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition. The names of three other injured could not be known immediately.

Both the dead and injured are day labourers in profession.

Sources said the accident occurred when a Khilkhet-bound speeding pick-up van ran over them while they were waiting for a trawler near Barura bridge at Khilkhet at 4:45am, leaving the two dead on the spot. The van left the scene within a few minutes after the accident.

A case was filed with the Khilkhet police station in this regard.

Our Correspondent from Tangail reports: Two people were killed in a road accident on Tangail-Mymensingh road at Ghatail upazila in the district yesterday.

One of the dead was identified as Mohammad Abdul Aziz, 30, of Taratongi village at Muktagachha upazila in Mymensingh district. The identity of the other victim could not be known immediately.

Police and witnesses said the accident occurred at around 5:00am when a Tangail-bound fish-laden pick-up van from Muktagachha knocked a standing roadside truck from behind at Atharodana area in the upazila, leaving the pick-up van helper Abdul Aziz and an unidentified fish trader dead on the spot.

The driver of the pick-up van, however, managed to escape.

Ghatail Police recovered the bodies and sent them to Tangail General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
