10 business firms fined Tk 3 lakh

A mobile court in a drive in the last two days here fined ten business firms Tk 3 lakh for encroaching a large drain and ordered the firms to clean the drain immediately on their own.The firms are Jainab Steel, Al Safa Iron Mart, Khan Enterprise, Muniria Iron Mart, Allaras Enterprise, Shahjalal Sanitary, Khaza Iron Steel, Rashed Enterprise, Bismillah Enterprise and Abbas Ali Iron Mart. The court led by Metropolitan Magistrate Muhammad Munir Chowdhury in the two-day drive found the firms, particularly engineering workshops that deal in scrap metals, occupying 2000-feet stretch of a large drain with 5-feet depth and 4-feet width in the city's Madarbari area. Disposal of metal and waste products by these firms caused serious waterlogging and forced the drain to overflow and inundate a huge area of Madarbari and Majhirghat during the recent downpour, said the sources. The same court in another drive fined CA Properties Development Limited Tk 20000 at SS Khaled Road of Jamal Khan area for filling up a drain along the road with 3000 cubic feet of earth that caused serious waterlogging during the recent downpour.
