Moitree Express ready to run to Kolkata

The Moitree Express, the first-ever international train service between Bangladesh and India, is now ready for operation as it will start running between Dhaka and Kolkata from the middle of next month.Assembled in Saidpur railway workshop with passenger carriages imported from Indonesia, the 300-seat capacity train has already made several trial runs from Saidpur railway station to the other side of Bangabandhu Jamuna Bridge, railway sources said. It will run between Dhaka Cantonment rail station and Kolkata of West Bengal via Darshana without any break, Divisional Superintendent of Saidpur railway workshop Abdul Matin Chowdhury said. The nicely decorated train is fitted with all types of modern facilities and it has a speed of 150 km per hour, Saidpur railway workshop sources said. The train is assembled with some of the modern and sophisticated rail passenger carriages that were imported from Indonesia towards the end of 2006. Cost of each carriage varies from Tk 1 crore 80 lakh to 3 crore according to the facilities available. The Moitree Express comprising chair coaches of economy class (Shovon class), air-conditioned first class and air-conditioned sleeping class will also have one power car, one buffet car and a prayer car.
