Santal revolution day observered


152nd anniversary of Santal Hul (revolution) was observered yesterday in Kakonhat upazial in Rajshahi with a fresh call for a new revolution to establish the rights of indigenous people in the society.

To mark the day rally, discussion meeting, arrow throwing competition and cultural programmes were arranged at Kakonhat in Rajshahi.

In 1855-57 period Santal revolution was one of the major revolts against the British rule. During the revolution 2 millions people-mostly Santals and farmers were killed.

At a discussion meeting at Kakonhat high school playground speakers urged the government to observe the day at state level and to ensure the rights of indigenous people to their land and language.

Speakers also discussed about the sacrificed and role of Indigenous peoples in Liberation war in 1971.

Freedom fighter Nurul Islam, Modhusudon Maitra, Bimol Chandra, Uttam Kumar, Biswanath Hemron, Godagari Upazilla social welfare officer Kamruzzman and local adibashi leaders addressed in the discussion.

This year eight indigenous freedom fighters will be awarded 'Sidhu-Kanu' Award. The award was established after the name of two brothers Sidhu and Kanu who spearheaded the Santal Hul.
