Road crashes kill 5, injure 84


At least five people were killed and 84 others injured in separate road accidents in Savar, Magura and Dinajpur yesterday.

UNB from Savar adds: Two people were killed and two others injured as a bus hit a van at Jamgora bus stand on Abdullahpur-EPZ road yesterday.

Police said the accident occurred when the driver of a Dhaka-bound bus from Tangail lost control over the steering, leaving the unidentified van driver and passenger Abul Kalam, 28 of Manikganj district, dead on the spot at 9:00am.

The two injured passengers of the van were rushed to a local clinic.

Police arrested the bus driver and seized the bus.

Our correspondent from Magura reports: One person was killed and 42 others were injured in separate road accidents in Magura yesterday.

An accident occurred at around 11:40am at Shimulia on Magura-Jessore highway when a Magura-bound passenger bus from Jessore fell into a road-side ditch when its driver lost control over the steering, leaving at least 40 people injured, 10 of them critically.

Meanwhile, one person was killed and two others were injured in a road accident at Hulinagar on Magura-Faridpur highway at about 3:00pm.

The accident occurred when a pick-up van hit a passenger rickshaw-van from the behind.

The injured were rushed to Magura sadar hospital.

The deceased was identified as Chaitanya Sarkar, 45, son of Fatik Chandra Sarkar of village Hulinagar in Magura Sadar upazila.

Police seized the vehicles.

The seriously injured are Rabi, 45, Ramesh, 32, Sujan 28, Sabuj 22, Babar Ali, 50, Gobindo, 38, Wahab, 50, Shamsher, 30, Azgar, 32, and Sukumar Ghosh, 42.

Our correspondent from Dinajpur says: Two people were killed and at least 40 others were injured in a road accident at Ranir Bandar Bazar under Chirir Bandar upazila in Dinajpur yesterday.

The dead were identified as Md Azizar Rahman, 35, son of Yousuf Ali of Bogra Sadar upazila and Saimunnessa, 34 of village Baragurgala under Dinajpur Sadar upazila, police said.

The locals rushed the injured to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital, Sayedpur and Chirir Bandar Health Complex.

Of the injured, condition of six is critical, doctors said.

Witnesses said the accident occurred when a Thakurgaon-bound passenger bus collided with a Rangpur-bound passenger bus near Ranir Bandar Bazar under Chiriri Bandar upazila on Dinajpur- Rangpur highway.

The accident disrupted road communication between Rangpur and Dinajpur for at least two hours.
