NBR sues Tuku for Tk 3.8cr tax evasion

Detained former state minister for power Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku was sued by National Board of Revenue (NBR) yesterday for evading Tk 3.80 crore in income tax.Judgement of a case against former BNP lawmaker Ali Asgar Lobi filed for evading Tk 17crore income tax will be delivered today. Proceedings of a criminal case against former law minister barrister Moudud Ahmed were adjourned yesterday. TUKU'S TAX EVASION CASE Senior Special Judge Mohammad Azizul Haq of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court, Dhaka issued an arrest warrant against Tuku after Mohammad Nurul Amin, deputy tax commissioner of Taxpayers' Service Wing of NBR, filed the case. In his order, the judge said the arrest warrant was issued against Tuku as the charges brought against him under sections 165/166 of the Income Tax Ordinance 1984 were found to be true. The court fixed today for the next hearing of the case and directed the jail authorities to produce Tuku during the hearing. In his complaint, Amin mentioned that Tuku had evaded a total of Tk 3,80,14,048.30 in income tax during fiscal years 1999 to 2007. Tuku repeatedly gave false information to the income tax department about his real income and expenditure and did not show his income tax return. He also used his ministerial position to conceal information about his real income, the complainant said. Moreover, Tuku did not submit statements about his non-agricultural properties, motor vehicles, bank statements, credit cards, savings instruments, fixed deposits and interest on fixed deposits, Amin added. On February 5, the joint forces arrested Tuku from his Mohammadpur residence. TUKU'S CASE FOR FILING FALSE WEALTH STATEMENT The hearing on another graft case will be held today against Tuku, his wife, son and daughter for submitting false wealth statements to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) within the stipulated time frame. The same court on Tuesday sent Tuku's wife Romana Mahmud, son Abed Hasan Mahmud and daughter Sarah Hasan Mahmud to jail after police produced them before the court. Police arrested them following arrest warrants against them as they have been absconding since the case was filed on March 21. On June 28, ACC Assistant Director ASM Akhter Hamid Bhuiyan, the investigation officer (IO) of the case, submitted charge sheet against Tuku, his wife, son and daughter to the Court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM), Dhaka showing 61 people as prosecution witnesses. VERDICT OF LOBI CASE Judgement of the tax evasion case against former lawmaker Lobi will be delivered today at a special court. Judge Shahed Noor Uddin of the Third Special Judge -- set up at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar MP Hostel -- will deliver the verdict at 11:30am, court sources said. On May 23, the NBR filed the case against Lobi for evading Tk 17crore in income tax. MOUDUD CASE A Dhaka court yesterday adjourned the proceedings of the contraband liquor possession case against Moudud till July 10 following a time petition by defence lawyers. Judge AKM Enamul Haq of the Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court set the date after the defence lawyers submitted a petition saying that the High Court had earlier stayed all the proceedings of the case till July 9. The order came after Moudud's lawyers submitted a petition to the HC for quashing the case. Moudud was present at the court during yesterday's hearing. NASIM CASE The graft case against former Awami League home minister Mohammad Nasim and his wife for submitting false wealth statements to the ACC was sent yesterday to the sessions judge's court for trial. After scrutinising the case docket and other relevant documents, the CMM Court transferred the case to the court of Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court. On Tuesday, Mahbubul Alam, assistant director of ACC, submitted charge sheet against Nasim and his wife Laila Arzumand Banu to the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Dhaka showing 31 people as prosecution witnesses. On March 21, ACC Deputy Director Akhter Hossain filed a case against Nasim and his wife Laila with Dhanmondi Police Station for providing false information in their wealth statements submitted to the ACC. In the case, Akhter mentioned that in their statements, Nasim and his wife concealed information about their wealth worth Tk 1.26 crore. Nasim is now in jail while his wife is on bail. CASE AGAINST FORMER FOREST CHIEF A Dhaka court yesterday placed former chief forest conservator Anwarul Islam on a five-day remand in connection with a graft case. Metropolitan Magistrate Jagannath Das Khokon passed the order after the ACC produced the former forest boss Anwarul before the court with a seven-day remand prayer. In his forwarding report, ACC Assistant Director Talebur Rahman, also the IO of the case, mentioned that Anwar had earlier appointed 79 people to different posts of forest department without approval of the establishment ministry. As such, he needs to be quizzed to find out clues about irregularities in appointing those people, the IO said. The ACC filed the case against Anwar and 79 others on June 25 with Gulshan Police Station for committing the irregularities in recruiting the people.
